The Central Iraqi Soccer Federation officially signed the Serbian Bora Milutinovic on as coach of the Iraqi national team, at a press conference held in the Jordanian capital of Amman.
The Serbian coach sent the message to the Iraqi public that they will see the Iraqi team at an elevated level, saying, “I agreed on a training program with the Iraqi Soccer Federation.”
Bora concluded his remarks by saying that “with all due respect to the other teams in our group (South Africa, Spain, New Zealand), I pledge to the Iraqi people that the Iraqi team will qualify for the round of four (the semifinals).”
Captain Hussein Said, former president of the Iraqi Soccer Federation, said, “First of all, we agreed to contract with a major international coach to coach our national team.”
Hussein added, “We know Bora very well, especially since we remember him from the World Cup (Mexico 1986), when he led Mexico to a 1-0 victory over us.”
Hussein followed by saying, “Bora’s mission will be to lead our national team in the Confederations Cup, which begins on June 14. His contract is renewable.”
