The Central Iraqi Soccer Federation selected October 9th as the date for the start of the Iraqi Premier League games. The federation will use the groups system that it has been using for the last five seasons to promote and develop the game in various Iraqi cities.
Forty-three teams will participate in the local league in the 2009 - 2010 season.
The teams will be divided into 6 groups according to their geographical locations. Each group will have 7 teams, with the exception of the southern groups, which will have 8 teams each. The first and second team in each group will qualify to the final round.
The teams will then be chosen as is done in all countries of the world. Twelve teams will form the Premier League. They will play games at home and away. This way the upcoming league will be the best in the last five years.
The Iraqi federation has planned to establish a professional league for the first time, starting in the 2010 - 2011 season.
